Business Spotlight

This week (and longer, since we don't meet again until November 29th), the soft, comforting glow of the Business Spotlight shines on Brandi Easter, "The Girl With The Camera". Brandi has been a commercial and portrait photographer for about 19 years, mostly in Humboldt County, and she has an impressive list of clients. Check out her website for more information and a gallery of her work!  www.brandieaster.com

Notes From Our Last Meeting
We received an update from Exchange Student Jessica Bono on Friday - She was the "Eye Donor" in last week's Arcata Eye. In addition, she also took in a movie and (of course) went to school.

There is a new Rotary Kid in town - Gabriella Cavinta, daughter of Sunriser George and his wife Diana. President Lori reinstated an old tradition - we passed the hat to start a fund for the new arrival.

Taste of the Holidays is coming up pretty soon, I think. Hmmm ... when is it? TOMORROW??? OHMYGAWD!!! If you're reading this and you aren't a Sunriser, relax - just be at the Community Center around 5 pm. Bring your checkbook/wallet/folding money. Trust me - we'll take care of it for you.

And don't lose sight of the Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament, coming up on December 7th, 8th, and 9th. We'll need help at the door, security, and with the coaches' party. You may still be able to place an ad in the AIBT Program, if you contact Bryan Reeser quickly.

Special Daze

Will the correct Bob please stand up? President Lori thought that Bob Goodman's birthday was October 30th, however that was the date that Bob Goodwin was born. (I always get those two confused - they look so much alike.) Mr. Win said that he had a nice birthday, celebrating at Hurricane Kate's in low-key fashion.

Hal and Marge Fitzpatrick celebrated 35 years of marriage on October 21st. "Did she remember?" asked President Lori. "Well," responded Hal. "I'm not sure." Someone must have remembered, because they went out for a champagne breakfast and then to dinner that evening.

Hand Over Fist With Bob Johnson
No one is safe with Bob Johnson in the Finemaster role ... not even Travis Schneider. "You've got a goose egg so far," said Bob, "but not because you're boring." Thus the former Club President was persuaded to provide a glimpse into Schneiderworld. There was a boating incident over Labor Day Weekend at Trinity Lake. Well, most of the incident happened on the lake - Travis and his group were coming back from a barbecue, and they "took the boat onto the shore". Fortunately, no one was hurt. I don't think this was directly related, but then Travis headed for Boston, and then (the week before last) went hunting with his father in Edmonton. Bob also asked about the 28,000 square foot building that is in the works for MotorSports. "Do you get to ride all the motorcycles?" Bob asked. "No," replied Travis. "But I get to push them in and out of the building."

New grandpappy Mark Burtchett recently traveled to Italy. Although he stopped briefly in Milan and toured Northern Italy, including Tuscany and Lake Como, he didn't visit with anyone from Jessica Bono's family. Mark said that "it is a beautiful country".

Bob then called upon the aforementioned Exchange Student Jessica, noting (again) that her eye had been featured in the latest edition of the Arcata Eye. She was on the Plaza with Sir Charles when they met up with Terrence McNally. They talked for a while, during which time, Terrence took her photo. What showed up with Jessica's eye was the comment that Arcatans "could dress a little better". Jessica admitted that she sent a copy of the paper home. Bob said, "See how famous you are?"

Michael Boreing said that he recently became a "new brother and uncle". He was adopted shortly after his birth, into a great family. Recently, he began a low-key search for his birth parents, which didn't initially pan out. He decided to send a letter that he hoped would reach his biological mother, just "to let her know that everything's cool" - that it worked out well for Michael. the letter went in the mail, but before she got it, Michael heard from her. He learned that he has six siblings, and a lot of nieces and nephews. He plans to go back to visit his rediscovered clan in January, and then again at a family reunion later in the year.

Bob then recognized Dan Collen for his recent electoral win - Dan will be joining the Board of Trustees for the Northern Humboldt Union High School District. "I'm very honored," Dan said. "I want to thank everyone who helped by putting up signs." Congratulations, Dan.

Friday's Program: Mary Gelinas of the Cascadia Center for Leadership
Mary Gelinas is one of the Co-Directors of the Cascadia Center for Leadership. She is also a managing director of Gelinas-James, a business consulting firm based in Humboldt County, but with a client base that reaches far beyond the North Coast.

Cascadia was founded in 2000 by Sunriser Kathy Moxon and Julie Fulkerson to meet the need to identify and develop new leaders. Its mission is to invigorate "every individual's commitment and ability to take on the toughest issues facing their communities and organizations so that collaboratively they can create the communities and organizations of their dreams".

This mission is supported in three basic ways: First, Cascadia has its signature Leadership Program, which meets for ten days over a four-month span. This program focuses on the five domains of leadership: intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, and inter-organizational/community. Second, Cascadia also presents one-day workshops, covering various aspects of leadership. Finally, the organization hosts luncheons which feature one or more speakers.

Mary says that each of us is a leader. "You can't help but lead." For more information about Cascadia and its programs, visit their website at www.cascadialeadership.org
