Business Spotlight By order of President Lori, the Business Spotlight continues to shine on Los Bagels through this Friday. General Manager/Sunriser Charlie Jordan was swamped last week, between her long hours at the Kinetic Lab's Haunted House and Dia de los Muertos at Los Bagels! So the clipboard will remain at 1061 Eye Street (between 10th and 11th Streets). Be sure to say hi to Charlie, if you can. There's still no clipboard in Eureka, but you'll still find lots of goodies at 403 Second Street, and the HSU version of Los Bagels is situated in the Depot. |

| Notes From Our Last Meeting | |
|
Last Friday, Exchange Student Jessica
Bono from Italy told us that she spent the previous weekend in Fort
Bragg, watching a soccer tournament. That must have looked relatively
familiar to her, compared to later in the week, when she had her first
experience with the unusual American traditions surrounding Halloween.
Although Jessica didn't go trick-or-treating, she did carve a pumpkin.
And sometime during all that, she enjoyed an abalone dinner at the home
of Sir Charles and Lady Barbara Giannini.
President Lori did some braggin' on her kids regarding the Fort Bragg soccer tourney - Megan's team was tied at one in at the end of regulation time in the championship game. So the game went to shootouts ... and Megan and crew won right away! It's your last chance (this year) to nominate someone (maybe yourself!) for the Board of Directors. Let Karen Burgesser know your nominee before Friday by phone or e-mail. Elections will be held on November 30th. Cam Appleton reported that members of the Youth Exchange Committee interviewed candidates for the 2008-2009 Exchange Year on Thursday night. We'll hear the decision from the group very soon. The Taste of the Holidays is (it's almost a cliché now) almost upon us - one week from tomorrow? Really? Get your Dutch Auction prizes in, make sure you're signed up for a committee, be ready to have some fun! Following the Taste of the Holidays, we have a bye week (we're dark the day after Thanksgiving). That gives us a little rest before the AIBT - the Jerry Paul Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament. George Cavinta said that if you ran an ad in last year's program, please make it a habit - the sponsorship signup sheet made the rounds last week, and it will be around for an encore this Friday. Watch for it! |

| Hands-On Opportunity - This Saturday! | |
|
Volunteers are still needed for a Friends of the Dunes work party this Saturday, from 9am-1pm at the old Stamps house, located at 200 Stamps Lane in Manila. The Friends acquired the ocean view house along with 38 acres this past summer and has plans to transform the building into a public interpretive center for coastal education and conservation. Prior to the major renovation, Friends of the Dunes needs help fixing up the house to make it suitable for staff offices, meeting space and special events. This Saturday, help is needed to scrape old stucco off walls, paint and clean. Friends will supply food, tools, and guidance. Please RSVP so Carol knows how much food to get. For more info, call Carol Vander Meer, Executive Director at: 268-5539. |

| Welcome Jenny, Mark, and Dean! | |
|
Last Friday, we were pleased to greet
three new members.
Jenny Bowen is the Executive Director of the Arcata Chamber of Commerce and the California Welcome Center, Mark Bruce is an attorney, and Dean Viseth is a commercial lines agent. We welcomed the trio in our traditional fashion - making our way to the front of the room to shake hands with each new Sunriser. |

| Orrin Rakes in the Dough | |
|
Last week, Orrin Plocher served as
Finemaster. His first victim was David Neyra, who was wearing a
distressed hat. I don't know what traumas it has survived, but it sells
for $25 at
Humboldt Outfitters.
Orrin then asked Romi Hitchcock Tinseth, "When you rent a car, do you get extra coverage?" It seems that Romi was driving a rental when she had a rather sudden encounter with a deer. The deer is fine, but the car was totaled. Romi described the scene: "I was doing the whole fishtailing thing, and the deer was was saying, 'Cool!'." Brett Johnson made up at the Truckee Rotary recently, and Orrin indicated that he received a report that Brett was obnoxious and would no longer be welcome there. This seems extremely unlikely to me. Brett simply said that the club's program for the day was about one of the club's literacy projects, where several of their members go to a local preschool and read to the kids. Orrin then turned to Jessica McKnight, asking what she's been up to. "I've been under the radar for a while," she admitted. About a year ago, she purchased her childhood home in Rio Dell from her parents. She recently acquired new kitchen cabinets, and she is hoping that these will prove to be the falling domino that eventually leads to a more comprehensive kitchen remodel. President Lori had one last recognition. She displayed a photo of a nascent rock star - Noah Stauffer. Conveniently, his father happens to be Sunriser Howard Stauffer, who provided some details. About a year ago, Noah started playing guitar and he "has a real passion for it". He practices six to eight hours each day, according to Howard. |

| Brittany McWilliams on RYLA | |
|
Each summer, we sponsor one or more
students from Arcata High School to the Rotary Youth Leadership in
Action (RYLA) Camp. The week-long camp is held in Westminster Woods,
near Occidental. This year, our representative was Brittany McWilliams. Brittany told us that there were seven girls in her cabin. At first, they were all a bit shy, but by the second night, "there was non-stop talking". The students from all parts of Rotary District 5130 took part in leadership exercises, heard from motivational speakers, participated in various recreational activities, and had a lot of fun. She said that one of the counselors, Mike, was noted for entering a cabin with the announcement, "Mike's in the house ... hugs all around!" The counselor assigned to Brittany's cabin was perhaps not as enthusiastic as Mike - especially when the girls woke her up early in the morning! Brittany says that she is still in touch with the friends she made this summer, and she thanked us for the "great experience". |
