Business Spotlight

Sunriser Helyn Johnston invites you to come to Smith Barney in Eureka, where she serves as a Financial Advisor. "My business is about helping people achieve their dreams," she told us. Smith Barney is under the Citigroup umbrella (literally, it would seemà).

Helyn plans to provide all Sunrisers who visit a copy of a research report on the financial markets, as well as a Personal Financial Portfolio to help them plan their future.

Notes From Our Last Meeting
Sir Charles and Janice Newman were among those who admitted that they had attended the previous week's Fellowship Dinner at the Steelhead Lodge in Klamath. The call went out, "If you can remember that you were at the Steelhead Lodge, please stand up." Chuck saluted Opie Quality Cars, which provided vans for us at no charge.

Janice was also at the well-attended Youth Exchange Information Night at Arcata High School, along with Cam Appleton. The Youth Exchange Committee reminded us all that the deadline for applications for the 2008-2009 Exchange Year are due at the end of this month.

John Wesa claimed that he was a bit uneasy about Pastels on the Plaza, which was to take place the day after our last meeting. "I'm nervous about it," he said. He needn't have been. Check out the Arcata Sunrise Rotary Blog for photos.

Howard Stauffer provided an update of our Club's World Community Services projects. In Malawi, we are in the last year of our project helping the Chibade Village School. In years past, we funded the construction of eight classrooms that hold a total of 400 students. Now we are providing furniture for those classrooms. In Cofradia, Mexico, we have provided fluoridation pills for young people and we supported the construction of laundry washing stations in a camp for migrant workers. We are assisting other local Rotary clubs that are continuing to provide much-needed equipment for Tomsk Hospital in Siberia, Russia. Sunriser Bruce LeBel, who runs World Shelters, is heading up our efforts to continue to provide shelters for those displaced by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean. In Nicaragua, we are supporting Maya Kessler, whose girls basketball program provides a source of self-esteem and fellowship. In Colombia, we have provided medical and dental supplies for displaced families, while in Vietnam, we have helped the disabled and financially needy receive wheelchairs. In Cambodia, we are supporting the efforts of Hans Eide, a Rotarian from Foster City. Hans founded the Mongkol Borei, and we help fund teachers' salaries and provide supplies for two classrooms (50 students). In Laos, we are supporting the New Vangtang Village School, and in Tanzania, we will be supporting efforts to provide clean water systems for two villages. In addition, Howard reminded us that there will be at least two opportunities to go to Mexico and help out with Project Amigo - these will take place in January and March 2008.

As you can see on the Events Calendar to your right, the 2007 Edition of A Taste of the Holidays is only a few weeks away. If you were at last week's meeting, you received your packet of tickets. It's time to sell 'em. It's also time to provide a prize for the raffle - something between $25 and $50 that will entice ticket-droppers.

And this month, don't forget the Foundation Dinner, which will take place at the Cultural Center in Crescent City on October 20th (only ten days off). If you can't attend (and you know you should), please be sure to support your Rotary Foundation by purchasing raffle tickets - they're $20 each, or six for $100, and the entire price of the tickets is credited to your Paul Harris Sustaining Fellowship account. (And don't think that you have to stop at six tickets!)

Special Daze
Helyn Johnston's birthday was September 23rd, and she said that her children gave her a surprise party. The celebration involved dinner and dancing. President Lori asked, "Was this a big birthday?" "Yes, it was," came the reply. The consensus was that Helyn is "29 again".

Bryan and Susan Reeser celebrated their 10th anniversary back on July 12th. They hiked on the Lost Coast and stayed at the Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale.

Bob and Susan Johnson's 27th anniversary was September 20th. They began the day working together, then they attended an event at the Plaza Grill. Then it was off to HSU for the show, "Tango Forever".

September 26th was another Johnson couple's anniversary. This time it was Number 15 for Dan and Kendra. They celebrated by re-enacting their wedding, with their children stepping into some of the key roles. The event was a total surprise for Kendra. The couple also provided Fifteen Memories of the Fifteen Years.

Finemaster Bob Returns to the Podium!

There's just something special about the Fridays that Bob Johnson serves as the Finemaster. Just ask Dan Collen. Well, we would, but Dan left before Bob could discuss a campaign strategy with him. Maybe next week?

Scott Heller was around, though. In a follow-up to a previous prank, Scott sent Bob a photo showing that several lots for sale had been sold ... no, really ... Scott then said that he did attend the event at the Steelhead Lodge, serving as a designated driver. He wasn't going to attend because his ailing father was in the hospital. But he decided to doff his father-in-law's chauffeur's cap and, dressed in a black suit, he ferried Sunrisers up the Redwood Highway. His riders passed the hat (actually, the chauffeur's cap), raising $60 as a tip for their driver. Scott wasn't comfortable keeping the cash, so he decided to donate it to the American Cancer Society. Bob told him to send the cap around the Club to secure additional ACS funding. Scott said that his father was released from the hospital on Thursday of last week. We wish him well.

Bob called upon Terri Clark for some news, saying, "You're always good for some news - give me $20 worth!"  Well, Terri said that last month, she was planning to fly to Seattle, but hubby Marty Lay said, "I think your flight's been cancelled." It had, so she got up at three in the morning and drove there instead. The occasion was the selection of Rotary International's newest member of the Board of Directors - District 5130's own PDG, John Blount of the Sebastopol Rotary. (See the District 5130 website for more information.) With the fine, Terri hit "Bold and Blue" status, which earned her a "Rotary Cares" mousepad.

Amy Bohner and Dan Johnson also became B & B with $20 contributions.

President Lori shared some good news about her daughters' soccer exploits from the previous weekend. Megan's team suffered its first loss, but still placed third in a tournament in the Bay Area. In the same tourney, but a different age bracket, Katie's team was undefeated. Lori contributed $50 per child to the Rotary Foundation.

Our Speaker Last Week - Exchange Student Jessica Bono
At 14, Jessica Bono decided that she wanted to be a Rotary Exchange Student. Four years later, she is here with us. Last week, she provided a look at her home country, Italy. One of the country's nicknames is "Lo Stivale" or "The Boot". It is also known as "Il Bel Paese", "the Beautiful Country" - a most fitting appellation, judging from the photos Jessica showed.

Two important dates in Italian history are March 17, 1861, the date of the unification of Italy, and June 2, 1946, when Italy became a republic. The capital is Rome, the Italian President is Giorgio Napolitano, and the Prime Minister is Romano Prodi. The President's house is the Palazzo Chigi. Jessica told us that the three colors in the Italian flag represent hope (green), faith (white), and charity (red)'

Jessica's home is Brugherio, a city of 30,144 near Milan in Northern Italy. The city was founded on the ancestral lands of Saint Ambrogio in the fourth century. Over the centuries, it served as a holiday destination for the Italian aristocracy.

Jessica showed photos of Milan, including the Teatro del la Scala, the internationally renowned ballet and opera house and the Castello Sforzesco, an art gallery. Brugherio is also near Monza, a major stop on the Formula One auto racing circuit.
