Business Spotlight

Bryan Plumley asked his daughter if she knew what Daddy does for a living, and of course she did - he talks on the phone and types on the computer. If you want to watch him do that, he (and Edward Jones Investments) welcome you as this week's Business Spotlight.

Bryan says that you should check out the art in the office as you sign the clipboard and pick up the trivia information.

Be sure to call before you stop by to make sure that Bryan or his assistant Debi is in the office.

Notes From Our Last Meeting
Last Friday, Exchange Student Jessica Bono told us about her second week at Arcata High School. Her classes include US History, French (her favorite), German, and Spanish. She is making lots of new friends as she settles in.. Over Labor Day weekend, her host family (Kathy and Bill Fraser) took her to Lake Tahoe. Tonight (Wednesday) was the official "Welcome Jessica" party at Moonstone Beach. I'm sure we'll have some photos in a future Spirit. More Exchanger Updates - Jayme Tauzer is becoming more at home in Switzerland, and Nick Falor, who recently returned from Germany, is finishing his final semester at Arcata High, and he is eager to find a job.

President Lori had some reminders for us ... The deadline to apply for a spot on the Group Study Exchange Team that will be touring Nigeria this spring is fast approaching, as is the Oysters & Ale event to raise funds to equip the libraries of Humboldt County with Wi-Fi. And on Friday, September 28th, we will be making our way to the Steelhead Lodge in Klamath for dinner. The fellowship will start on the Timber Ridge bus, which will leave the Community Center at about 5:30 pm. If you drive up, the dinner will begin at 7 pm.

Terri Clark announced that this year's Foundation Dinner North will take place on October 20th in Crescent City. Mark your calendars and prepare to buy some raffle tickets! Terri sez: "The Del Norte County clubs are very excited about hosting it again."

Special Daze
Dan and Sarah Collen weren't in town for their recent anniversary. They were in Santa Barbara (oooh, romantic!), helping their daughter move (oh, not so romantic). But when they returned, they dined at Moonstone Grill (yeah, romantic!).

Charlie Jordan and her husband Mark Ritz celebrated their anniversary with a bike ride and some whale watching. They topped it off with some fine wine from the cellar.

Don't Be Frightened, We've Been Jessica McKnightened
Last week, Jessica McKnight gave the Finemaster Wheel of Misfortune a spin, and it flew off smack into Helyn Johnston, who fielded the following Trivia Question (from the pages of The Rotarian): What publicly traded company has formally adopted the Four-Way test? What's your guess? Check the bottom of this page for the answer that is the truth, that is fair to all concerned, that will build goodwill and better friendships, and will be beneficial to all concerned (if they look, that is).

Bob Moore was next on Jessica's list, since she had a photo showing muck-a-mucks from Umpqua Bank presenting a check for $6,000 to the American Cancer Society. Since Bob was one of the more prominent mucks, he was asked to present a check to the Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise. No photo this time.

Mark Burtchett was asked another Rotarian Trivia Question: Which of these locations is home to the first Rotary Club in which all of its members are Major Donors (each has contributed $10,000 or more to the Rotary Foundation)? The possible answers were a.) the United States, b.) Hong Kong, or c.) France. Mark guessed correctly with a little help from Romi Hitchcock Tinseth and Terri Clark ... did you? Check at the bottom of the web page.

Jessica resurrected the "Liar, Liar" game, where one Sunriser gives three statements about himself or herself, and a second Sunriser is asked to determine the lie. Jessica's Liar was Ann Hulsebus, and the Truthseeker was Dan Collen. Dan had to find the lie among these statements: 1.) Ann's primary language as a child was something I did not hear, 2.) She and Jim have a cabin at Trinity Lake, and 3.) The combined total number of children between her and Jim is something. I'm not going to have you guess, since I missed one or two crucial details. The answer is 2.) - sorry, no Trinity Lake cabin. But Dan guessed correctly, so he's off the hook. Wish I could say the same for me.

Bob Goodman told us that he recently spent 16 days floating through the Grand Canyon on a "guide trip". This meant that he was able to go to special places that only guides are allowed to go, and he even got to see the recent lunar eclipse from the canyon. Upon his return, he took great pleasure in deleting all of the junk e-mails that had piled up in his absence. He said that it was quite cleansing.

Bob Moore also traveled the Grand Canyon, but only for about 8 days. ("So that should be half of Bob Goodman's fine, right?" Wrong.) He said that it was beautiful and secluded, and it only rained toward the end of the trip. He also said that he competed in a recent triathlon in Crescent City and he had a mile swim on tap for the weekend.

At some point (I think here), we transitioned into Good News, where Sunrisers can provide otherwise fineable facts about their lives for a discount rate. Brett Johnson said that he recently completed his first ever triathlon with his fiancée Tracy. "I'll never forget that second wave coming at me!"

Karen Burgesser's family somehow acquired a new boat. It's a 20-footer.

Terri Clark expressed relief that the Co-op and the Food Workers Union were able to reach an agreement. She also said that she will be Seattle-bound soon to serve on the committee that will select the next Rotary International President-Elect.

Every 15 Minutes

Our program last week consisted of a video that showed the highlights of the Every 15 Minutes event that our Club staged on April 6th and 7th, 2006, in conjunction with the Arcata Police Department, the Arcata Volunteer Fire Department, and other emergency agencies. The event is part of a national program to graphically demonstrate to teens the potential personal devastation that can result from driving under the influence.

2006 marked the second time we have presented the two-day event, which is a reenactment of a DUI accident. The event is kept secret from the students, so it will have a greater impact on them. The presentation starts at the scene of the accident (directly in front of Arcata High School), and follows the action to the morgue and on to court. The video possessed an eerie resonance, given the recent tragic accident involving six young people in Ruth Lake. Only two survived.

Trivia Question #1: The answer (which I believe eluded Helyn) is Walgreen's, which adopted the test way back in 1955.

Trivia Question #2: Mark said that the correct answer is b.) Hong Kong.
