Notes From Our Last Meeting
Jessica Bono is our Inbound Exchange Student, and President Lori asked her about her first week at Arcata High School. She said that she was worried on her first day, but felt better as the week went on. A "Welcome Jessica" party is on tap for one week from tonight (next Wednesday), and I'm sure we'll have photos of that in an upcoming  Sunrise Spirit.

Speaking of Exchange Students, Craig Newman said that he has heard from Jayme Tauzer, who is our representative to Switzerland this year. Craig said that she is working on the language, but that it's difficult  since she has to learn "High German" and "Street German", which are essentially two different languages.

President Lori said that our "Rebound" Exchange Student, Nick Falor, is looking for a job. He has one more semester to go at Arcata High, but he's ready to go. His slogan is, "Energetic Student Seeks Employment". Contact Lori if you have an opening.

On the Friday before last, Finemaster Bob Johnson wrested some cash from Bob Moore and Bryan Reeser after they became lost in the Arcata Community Forest. Bob used graphics from the television show "Lost" to illustrate their plight. But a question remained ... where the hell was George (Cavinta)? Well, now we know. George put in his first appearance of the Lori Breyer Administration last Friday, and gave some answers. He said that he and the fam have been "vacationing". He said a lot and I missed most of it, but I did catch that they had been on a houseboat, to Oceanside, and to Disneyland. Wait, that's not all! He was leaving soon after Friday's meeting for Sun River to meet up with Bob Moore and his family. Could it be ... LOST, Season Two???

President Lori gave an update regarding the construction/re-construction going on at Chez Breyer. They are adding 1,000 square feet to their home (literally raising the roof as they add a second floor ... but that's another story). This has caused the girls to move in with their grandparents, while Lori and Dave are, erm, somewhere else. Katie reminded Lori that, when they were removing some of the old construction, they found two love letters dating from the mid-1940s, written by Connie Watson. Very romantic.

Next Monday, a team of Sunrisers will be staffing the phones for a KEET-TV Pledge Drive. They may call you, so be generous and consider a pledge to help support public television.

Your generosity is also welcome at the fundraisers listed to your right - this Saturday's event at the Bayside Grange to help defray the costs of little Jessiah Class's kidney transplant; Oysters & Ale at Woodley Island Marina, to help place free wi-fi at all Humboldt County Library locations; and the HSU Business School Dinner/Auction/Golf Tournament.

And, since you're feverishly marking your calendar, don't forget the trip up to the Steelhead Lodge in Klamath, which will take place Friday, September 28th. The Timber Ridge bus will leave town at 5:30, and dinner will be at 7:00. E-mail Past President Sir Charles for more details.

Special Daze
Speaking of Sir Charles ... August 28th was his birthday, and he celebrated with a party at Willow Creek. Chuck said that John Wesa and Guy Joy shared in the festivities, which included rafting.

On one of their rare visits to Humboldt County, George and Diana Cavinta went to Moonstone Grill to celebrate their 16th anniversary. As the romantic evening progressed, the couple looked for cocktails, stopped at the beach to look for whales, and strolled the aisles of Target.

Ralph and Laurie Altizer recently celebrated their anniversary (#28). Ralph said that he is prepared for all occasions - he said that he keeps various cards stashed throughout the house, so no opportunity will be overlooked.

What is Randy and Lisa Mendosa's secret to a successful marriage? After 18 years, they still go to Larrupin's for their anniversary. Oh yeah, without the kids for the night?

Matt and Liz Babich headed for Benbow Inn for their recent anniversary, and even though they bypassed Target, "we stopped at Bucksport Sporting Goods on the way down". Nothin' says love like a duck call.

And Don Andrews had his lovely wife Catherine (a former Sunriser) as his guest last Friday, and their anniversary took place in July. Their mode d'celebracion involved barbecuing and dining outside under the plum tree.

The Return of Finemaster Bob
The Finemaster of the Week was Bryan Plumley, who told us that he received a call from a fellow Edward Jones broker from Florida. His colleague said that he had been in Arcata about six months ago, and he went on and on about this beautiful girl he had met on the Plaza. As the description continued, the light bulb began to glow. Bryan asked, "Did she have an Alchemy Construction shirt on?" She did, so it was ... Amy Bohner!

Bryan then showed a photo of Sir Charles Giannini and a helicopter parked across the street from Napa Auto Parts. Chuck had received a call from a guy in Orleans who needed a part that Chuck had in stock, so he flew right down! Bryan asked whether the FAA had fined Chuck. They hadn't, so Bryan did.

Harry Johnson reports that the boat's okay. Oh yeah ... Sheryl's doing fine now, too. Apparently, Cap'n Harry hit a wave, and the impact sent First Mate Sheryl to the deck. Bryan provided Harry with a copy of the Harbor Safety Guide for the bargain price of $20.00.

Brandi Easter was asked about her experiences in the recent National Freediving Competition. She and Robin Hie won the Mixed Team honors, and Brandi placed third among the women in the event. Yay Brandi!

Terri Clark - Vietnam Revisited

Terri Clark is a Past District Governor, a former member of the Southwest Eureka Rotary, a current Sunriser, and a proud Rotarian. When she was the DG-Elect, she was asked if District 5130 would consider a Group Study Exchange with Vietnam. Terri's father was career military, and in the sixties, Terri "was getting in touch with my inner rebel". Vietnam has had a particular resonance for Terri. Still, she was a bit confused - was Vietnam a Rotary country again? It was not, but four districts, including ours, opted to send and receive GSE teams in 2003.

The teams from the US traveled together in Vietnam, a condition mandated by the Vietnamese government, and Terri was able to meet with them there. In April 2003, she met the Vietnamese GSE team assigned to our District. All had excellent English skills, and they adopted Terri as their host "Mother".

The following year, Terri was able to visit Vietnam as a side trip when she attended the Rotary International Convention in Osaka, Japan. She said that in Hanoi, she encountered "wild, scary traffic". At Ha Long Bay, near the Chinese border, "a place that really brought home the work we do" in providing fresh water where it is so desperately needed.

In March 2007, Terri was at the Red Cross office in Hue. The occasion was the delivery of 70 wheelchairs, provided by Rotary and by the Wheelchair Foundation. The Rotarians (including Terri's husband, Marty Lay, a member of the Southwest Eureka Rotary) there assembled the wheelchairs. Some recipients were not able to travel to Hue for the event. In many cases, their families strapped the chairs to motorbikes and to rickshaws to get them home.

The Hue event was followed by a similar distribution in Saigon. The latter event was more of a media event than the Hue program, but the heart of the effort was captured when Terri spoke of a 19-year old man who will now be able to get himself to work.

In February 2006, the RI Board voted to open Vietnam to for extension, and Rotary International's Extension Committee is working to re-establish Rotary Clubs there.
